Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

In February 2005, the Joseph Badger School District applied for and received a grant from Medtronic Emergency Response Systems for Automated External Defibrillators (AED).   With sudden cardiac arrest claiming the lives of nearly 1,000 people daily in the United States, AED’s offer a dramatic increase in the survival rates when utilized within five minutes of collapse.

In August of 2003, the Kinsman Volunteer Fire and Ambulatory Departments donated one AED to our district.  We received four additional AED’s from the grant one per building, bringing the district total to five.  While the AED is designed for the lay person to use, some training is recommended.  A requirement of the grant was to have five staff members at each building trained and certified in CPR/AED.  Currently twenty five staff members are certified.

The AED’s are located in easily accessible places with all staff aware of their location.  A daily check is done to ensure that the battery is charged and is in proper working order.  At the new building, the five AED’s are strategically placed so they are readily available throughout the entire school complex, in the event of an accident or emergency.

Currently, Dr. Jeff Bedlion of Kinsman is our acting Medical Director and Holly Blackburn, RN, is the site coordinator for the Joseph Badger AED program.
